Police Arrest Burglary Suspect

An East Hawai’i man faces first-degree burglary and first-degree theft charges.

According to a report from the Hawai’i County Police Department, Scott Taira, 21, was arrested for an alleged burglary in Pepe’ekeo.

Police arrested Taira Thursday evening after receiving a call that a man had walked onto a property on Maukaloa Street.

When the neighbor went to the property, Taira was said to be inside the house.

He allegedly threw a case out a window and then climbed out the wind and fled on foot, leaving the case behind.

When police recovered the case, it contained a rifle.

Officials said they also recovered a backpack inside the house packed with jewelry.

Taira is currently in police custody and his bail is set at $10,000.

His initial court appearance is Monday, Sept. 8.
