Tropics Ale House opened this month, adding an easygoing new dining option to the Waikoloa Beach Resort restaurant lineup.

Featuring “gourmet pub fare” in an atmosphere of casual class, the freestanding restaurant overlooks the Waikoloa Beach Course, with 24 local and craft brews on tap, ten TV’s for sports action, a fresh pub menu and daily “chalkboard” specials.

Locally operated by managing partners Brian Flynn and Sergio Villalobos, Tropics Ale House is a project of Hawai‘i restaurateur Pat Kashani, who also runs Tropics Tap House and Auntie Pasto’s in Honolulu, My Big Fat Greek restaurants in Arizona and 15 other locations nationwide.

Flynn, Villalobos and their team pitched in to renovate the former Buzz’s Sand Trap location, for an updated and open look, with cool, dark woods, a wraparound rough-hewn mango bar and club-style seating for parties large and small.

In the kitchen, Chef Keola Valdez and his crew cook up signature pub fare with a twist, where the popular burger sliders can be spiced up with chorizo, salsa and cilantro; beer-battered French onion rings come with Swiss cheese and gravy; panko-crusted jalapenos are made with fresh peppers; and the Romaine “wedge” salad is a sharable choice.

Their thin-crust pizzas are made with fresh dough daily, served in classic or creative combinations like the “Italian Stallion” (prosciutto, arugula, balsamic drizzle), as well as vegetarian and gluten-free options.

On tap, 24 different brews include choices from Hawaii’ Island’s own Big Island Brew Haus, plus select craft beers on a rotating basis. In the works are beer “flights,” offering four 5-oz. beer samplers of choice for one price, plus a local, custom-label brew created for Tropics Ale House.

“We have a very special place here, and we’re looking forward to establishing our home here and welcoming everybody from Waikoloa to come in and see all we have to offer,” said Flynn. “Tropics is like this warm, classy, casual place—where you could just as easily stop in for a cold one at the bar, bring the family for dinner, or meet friends after work. We are open until midnight every day, and serve food right up to closing for the late night ‘pau hana.’”

Located within Waikoloa Beach Resort (a right turn at the fifth stop sign), Tropics Ale House is open for Lunch and Dinner daily, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., with Happy Hour 3-6 p.m. Live entertainment is provided Friday and Saturday night, with breakfast and Bloody Mary bar offered during football season.
