Hawaii Red Cross Continues Overnight Shelter in Pāhoa

The Hawaiʻi Red Cross Shelter at the Pāhoa Community Center on Hawaiʻi Island remains open to support those impacted by Tropical Cyclone Iselle.

Residents at the shelter are being provided with meals, a cot to sleep on, and will also be able to take a shower and charge their phones.

Last night, there were 21 overnight stays at the shelter. Representatives with the organization say that since last week Thursday, Aug. 7, there have been more than 2,200 overnight stays at 32 Red Cross shelters statewide.

Big Island Red Cross caseworkers have also started visiting the hardest hit areas to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed to help with the recovery process.

Organization representatives say there are an estimated 200 Red Cross workers assisting in response, 94% of which are volunteers.

The state Emergency Management Agency has also released a list of suggested ways to donate, volunteer and assist with recovery.
