UPDATE: All Football Games Featuring BIIF Teams Cancelled
All of this weekend’s football games involving Big Island Interscholastic Federation teams
As first reported by the Maui News, Kea`au High School’s road game against Lahainaluna was cancelled, with the decision coming down Tuesday night.
According to Kea`au Athletic Director Iris McGuire, the Cougars were supposed to fly to Maui from Hilo on the first flight Friday morning. They were scheduled to play at 7:00 p.m. at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium. In an e-mail, McGuire said that the game will not be rescheduled “until possibly next year.”
Kea`au will now open its season with a home game against St. Francis of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. The game is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 16, with kickoff slated for 6:00 p.m.
Honoka`a High School’s home game against Oahu Interscholastic Association opponent Kaimuki was also cancelled. It was the Dragons’ only preseason game scheduled prior to the start of the regular season.
According to Honoka`a Athletic Director Keith Tolentino, the Dragons have a controlled scrimmage against Hilo on Aug. 22 and will work to schedule another one prior to its regular season opener on Aug. 30 at Kealakehe.
Kamehameha-Hawai`i Athletic Director Kimo Weaver told Big Island Now in an e-mail Wednesday morning that his school’s game on Oahu against Kalaheo High School was cancelled. The game was scheduled to be played Saturday at Kailua High School.
Konawaena will not travel to Oahu to meet St. Francis Saturday in an inter league football contest. BIIF Executive Director Lyle Crozier announced the game cancellation around noon on Wednesday.
Waiakea’s home game against Moanalua, scheduled for Saturday, was also cancelled Wednesday afternoon. Moku Pita, head coach of the Warriors, told Big Island Now that the decision was finalized once Moanalua was able to receive a refund on its airfare from Hawaiian Arilines.
The last game to be cancelled was Kealakehe’s home game against Kapolei. The game was scheduled to be played Saturday night.
