Oil Spill Closes Kanoelehua-Hualani Intersection
Police this morning closed the right-turn lane from Kanoelehua Avenue leading onto Hualani Street to clean up an oil spill.
The spill extended along the turn lane and for several dozen feet down Hualani.
Crews spread absorbent material on the substance which was then picked up by a street sweeper from the state Highways Division.
Authorities at the scene shortly before 10 a.m. said they weren’t sure what type of substance was involved, but noted that it was slippery.
The spill was expected to close the intersection with Hualani Street, which leads to the NAS Pool and cargo facilities on the western side of Hilo International Airport, for several hours.
Police asked that motorists use caution in the area.
