The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will receive a $9.7 million federal grant to be used for housing projects in areas that include Kona and Keaukaha in Hilo, Sen. Brian Schatz said today.

The DHHL’s priority for the funding includes using a portion for homeowner- and developer-financing for sweat equity and turnkey construction, home repair, and rental-with-option-to-purchase projects statewide, Schatz’s office said.

Other locations where the department plans to use the grant includes Kalamaula on Molokai, Waimanalo on Oahu and Anahola on Kauai.

The funding comes from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act.
