A 38-year-old Kona man died Wednesday afternoon after being thrown from a single-drum roller at a Holualoa construction site.

Police said Donny Loando of Holualoa was using the machinery in the construction of a private driveway when it rolled backwards down a sleep slope and crashed into a carport of a neighboring home.

Loando was thrown from the roller in the 1:11 p.m. incident.

A fire department spokesman said that Loando had to be removed from under the vehicle which had stopped in an unstable position.

He was transported in critical condition to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:15 p.m.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Police said an autopsy will be performed.

Anyone with additional information on the incident is asked to call Christopher Kapua-Allison at 326-4646. Ext. 229.
