Police are investigating the robbery of a visitor from France Monday night at the Waimea Shopping Center.

Police said the 34-year-old tourist was standing by his rental car shortly before 9 p.m. when he was approached by a man who asked if he had a cigarette or money.

After being turned down, the man shoved the visitor against the car and grabbed a bag he was carrying.

The suspect then fled on foot west on Mamalahoa Highway with the bag containing clothing valued at $50.

The suspect was described as local and in his 30s. He was about 5-foot-11 with a thin build, a “pointy” nose and a word tattooed on the right side of his neck. He was wearing shorts and a dark hoodie.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the police department at 935-3311.

Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
