A garage of a North Kohala home suffered minor damage Monday night from a fire that apparently started in some cans of paint.
Firefighters responding to a 6:23 p.m. alarm at the home at 52-4755 Akoni Pule Highway found black-grayish smoke coming out from under the eaves of the garage.
When they opened the building’s side door, they found an area of about 9 square feet burning, with the flames centered around a dozen gallon-sized paint cans.
Investigators were working with the caretaker of the home in an effort to determine what sparked the blaze.
The damage, which was restricted to the cans and one of the garage’s interior walls, was estimated at about $5,000.
