The first Kona Kickball Classic, an adult kickball tournament, will be held this Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Old Airport in Kailua-Kona.

Polynesian Roots Development LLC, Ka’eo Hawai’i and Kona Brewing Company have partnered to host the tournament, being planned as an annual one-day event in which team members must donate new or unwrapped toys to participate.

Kailua-Kona business owners, parents of immersion school students, local sports teams and non-profit organizations are participating in this first of its kind co-ed tournament, said event co-organizer Mahea Akau.

Toys collected on game day will be donated to area families in need this holiday season, Akau said.

“We want to bring our community together in health and in fun with a sport that all skill levels can participate in, and to bring smiles and happiness to our keiki this holiday season.” she said in a release for Saturday’s tournament.

An Awards Banquet and After Party will be held at Big Daddy’s on Kuakini Highway at the end of the kickball tournament where awards will be presented to teams for “Best Team Uniforms” and “Most Toys Donated.”

The community can support toy drive efforts at drop boxes located at Big Island Running Company locations in Coconut Grove Marketplace and in Hale Kui Plaza, and at the Ka’eo Hawai’i tattoo, art and apparel shop on Mamalahoa Highway, above Matsuyama Food Mart, Akau said.
