Black animals are among the most overlooked adoptable pets, according to the Hawaii Island Humane Society, so the non-profit’s three island shelter’s are offering 50% discounts on adoption fees for all-black or nearly black dogs and cats through Nov. 30.

The HIHS is participating in the nationwide “Back in Black” campaign, sponsored annually by Best Friends Animal Society to increase awareness and adoptions of all-black or mostly black dogs and cats.

“Although they’re every bit as adorable and sweet as other animals, pets in black often wait longer for homes than their lighter-colored pals,” said HIHS executive director Donna Whitaker.

“We’re so happy to participate in the Back in Black campaign, which shines a spotlight on these often-overlooked pets,” Whitaker said.
