Kona Brewing Co.’s new 12-ounce Longboard Island Lager bottles have been recognized for their innovation, design (including container label and closure), and consumer appeal.

The Glass Packaging Institute presented Kona Brewing with one of its 2013 Clear Choice Awards at Pack Expo in Las Vegas, one of the glass packaging industry’s premier conferences.

Kona Brewing’s flagship beer was one of seven companies recognized for their achievements in glass packaging.

Introduced in April, the new bottles feature a map of the Hawaiian Islands and the words “Liquid Aloha” embossed into the glass. The look also appears on the Kona Brewing’s Big Wave Golden Ale, Fire Rock Pale Ale and other beers.

By working closely with its glass supplier on the new design, Kona Brewing’s new bottles are 11% lighter, slimmer and stronger, making shipping less costly and more efficient, said a release.

Kona Brewing Company shipped 220,000 barrels of its products to 36 states in 2012, according to Business Wire, a 27% increase over 2011 sales. The company was founded in 1994.
