The state Department of Transportation has instituted speed and weight restrictions for the Umauma Stream Bridge on Highway 19 in North Hilo.
The DOT said deterioration of steel supports prompted the action for the bridge located near the 16-mile marker.
The action will reduce traffic on the bridge to alternating single-lane traffic through the use of portable traffic signals.
The restrictions include a maximum bridge weight limit of 25 tons and a reduction of the speed limit to 25 mph from 55 mph.
Heavy trucks are advised to use alternate routes if possible while emergency repairs are underway. The DOT said the work is expected to take from three to six months.
