Cruz-Balles Charged in Wednesday’s Carjacking

A 19-year-old homeless man was charged late this afternoon in connection with a carjacking Wednesday night in the parking lot of the Hilo Target store.
Police said Alkapone Cruz-Balles was charged with first-degree robbery and car theft.
Cruz-Balles was being held Friday in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $12,000 bail.
His initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
