Police are investigating a purse-snatching reported Wednesday afternoon in downtown Hilo.

A 64-year-old Keaau woman told police she and another woman were walking along Haili Street at about 12:50 p.m. when a man in his late 20s approached her from behind, grabbed her purse and fled down an alley next to the Palace Theater.

The suspect was described as a local male wearing a white tank-top undershirt, brown shorts and slippers.

Neither the woman nor a woman walking with her, a 59-year-old Keaau resident, was injured.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information on it is asked to contact Det. Grant Todd at 961-2385 or [email protected].

Tipsters who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
