There are times when the desire and well, desperation for Jazz has one contemplating a move to the mainland or beyond.

Instead of jet-setting, kick back with the coconuts as the 2012 British Jazz Vocalist of the Year kickstarts the Performing Arts Festival’s ninth season on Tuesday July 9, at Waimea’s Kahilu Theatre.

Liane Carroll has that gorgeous depth and scope of vocal emotionality which transfixes audiences worldwide. That slight growl and rasp at the end of some of her notes will have one holding a breath in wait of that drawl.

Her tones are vibrant and expressive. Hearts will break over and over throughout the night, as Carroll controls the room with a vocal flick. Improv is second nature as she exhales into note after note of complex and unexpected melodic lines.
