Police are asking motorists to avoid a section of Opelo Road in Waimea today while a private contractor removes trees hanging over the roadway and causing hazardous conditions.

The affected stretch of the road lies between Hokuula and Konokohau roads.

The work is expected to take most of the day.

Motorists are advised to use Laelae Road to Konokohau Road as an alternative route to access Lihipali Road and the upper portions of Opelo Road.

Police initially issued an advisory shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday, but work to correct the situation was delayed until morning because of safety considerations.
