A Spay Day Rally and fundraiser that will include a silent auction will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at the Mo`oheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo.

Coordinated by Hui Pono Holoholona, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing low-cost spay and neutering programs on the Big Island, the event will also include a free lucky-number drawing, a free spay/neuter drawing and an “Ask a Veterinarian” booth.

The event had previously been scheduled for February but heavy rains forced its postponement.

Music will be provided by Dennis & Christy Soares.

Companies providing auction items include Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Dolphin Quest, Big Island Candies, Basically Books, Jungle Love, Ken’s House of Pancakes, Ponds Hilo, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Kalapaua Tropicals.

Event organizers note that the Big Island is experiencing a crisis in unwanted litters of cats and dogs which result in more than 1,000 cats and dogs each month abandoned to starve, be killed on roadways or euthanized in shelters.

More than 3,000 dogs and cats have benefited from Hui Pono Holoholona clinics to date.

Volunteers for the rally are welcome and encouraged.
