UPDATE: Police have identified a man who died in a moped crash yesterday as 23-year-old Shyden D. Bento of Captain Cook.

Bento died of injuries he sustained in a moped crash on Painted Church Road in South Kona after his 2001 Honda veered off the right side of the road and crashed into a wall.

Kona patrol officers had responded just after 9 p.m,  arriving to find what they thought was a 15 or 16-year-old local male.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 pm.

Bento was identified later today. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 11th traffic fatality on Hawaiʻi Island this year compared with seven at this time last year.
