Big Island police are reminding motorists that public school students will be returning to classes on Thursday following the holiday break, and are suggesting that driving schedules should be adjusted accordingly.

Sgt. Robert Pauole of the department’s Traffic Services Section said drivers should expect an increase in traffic, especially in school zones during morning and afternoon hours.

Motorists are asked to use extra caution while driving near schools and to keep a lookout for students walking to school and using crosswalks.

Pauole also suggested that drivers use vehicle headlights during times of diminished visibility to increase safety.
