Ka`u Man Arrested After Shots Fired in Hilo Industrial Area

A 48-year-old Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man was arrested and charged with multiple offenses after a firearm was discharged on Makaʻala Street in Hilo.

Around 12:46 a.m. on Thursday, police officers responded to a call of shots being fired in the Hilo Industrial Area. After contacting witnesses, a vehicle was located parked on Makaʻala Street.

The vehicle was linked to Allen Benjamin III, who was taken into custody while criminal investigations detectives from the Area I Section worked the case.

No injuries were reported from the firearm being discharged. Detectives recovered ammunition and a firearm.

At 9 p.m. Thursday, after consulting prosecutors, Benjamin was charged with second-degree reckless endangering, place to keep ammunition, place to keep pistol, first-degree theft, and two counts of ownership/possession prohibited. Benjamin’s bail has been set at $15,000.

Benjamin was scheduled to make his initial court appearance this afternoon.
