Gov. Neil Abercrombie today ordered that Hawai`i flags at state offices and agencies will be flown at half-staff Tuesday in honor of the memory of former Sen. Arlen Specter.

The order, in keeping with a directive from President Obama to fly US flags at half-staff, will be in effect from sunrise to sunset.

Specter, a Republican from Pennsylvania, died Sunday at the age of 82 from complications of non-Hodgins Lymphoma.

A long-time moderate, Specter switched to the Democratic Party in 2009. He left office in 2011 after losing his re-election bid by being defeated in the Democratic primary.
