County water service will be cut off for more than five hours at mid-day Wednesday along a stretch of Hilo’s Waianuenue Avenue and a variety of surrounding streets.

The county Department of Water Supply said the outage from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. will occur along Waianuenue from Laimana Street, located near Hilo High School, to Punawai Street, located just above Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

Other affected areas include those streets intersecting with Waianuenue as well as Kahema, Hale, Halai, Hina, Ululi and Anakihi streets. The outage will also impact Haili Street from Halai up to and including Laimana Street; Alae Street from Halai up to and including Laimana; and Kaiulani Street, also known as Reed’s Boulevard, from Kahema to Waikoae Lane.

The outage is necessary to allow crews to isolate an old 8-inch water main that is being abandoned.

Customers may notice turbid or discolored water or air in their lines as a result of flushing after service is restored. They are also reminded to take precautions regarding disconnecting electrical power to pumps or other devices dependent on constant water pressure which might be harmed by the shut-off.
