The sudden loss of a generation unit cut electricity briefly this morning for approximately 4,700 Hawaii Electric Light Co. customers, a spokesman for the utility said.

Roger Keller said after the outage began at 8:47 a.m., additional generation units were brought on-line. Power was restored four minutes later.

Keller said the affected customers were located in the Waikoloa, Waika and Kuakini areas of West Hawaii.

Engineers were still trying to determine what caused the generator to trip off-line.
