Police Seeking Witnesses to Kona Robbery Tuesday Night

Police are looking for witnesses to a robbery Tuesday night in Kona.

A 22-year-old Captain Cook woman reported that she was sitting in a gold-colored Mazda sedan in a parking lot below Kona Community Hospital when she was accosted by a man wielding what appeared to be a firearm and demanding her valuables.

The woman gave the man her purse and he then fled makai toward Haukapila Road.

The robbery was reported to police at 7:45 p.m.

The suspect was described as 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds. He was wearing dark long pants, a dark hooded sweatshirt and a red bandana which covered the lower part of his face.

Police said the suspect spoke with a heavy pidgin accent.

Police hope to located the driver of a red sports utility vehicle that was seen traveling in the makai direction on Haukapila Road at the time the suspect fled or any other witnesses to the incident.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Det. Tyson Matsumura at 326-4646, ext. 277, or the police department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
