A 37-year-old man apparently drowned Saturday afternoon after being swept into the ocean while fishing along the Honomu shoreline.

The fisherman was identified by police as Ian Tengan of Hilo.

Hawai`i Fire Department personnel arriving at the scene known as 23 Flats Beach near the 12-mile marker of Highway 19 met with the Tengan’s friend who said the man was washed off the rocks by heavy surf and then disappeared under the waves.
