Big Island police today identified a 19-year-old Waikoloa man who died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a crash a week earlier as Wyland K.B. Damaso.

Damaso was driving a 2012 Ford sedan north on the Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway on July 30 when he crossed the center line and collided with a southbound 2001 Isuzu.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later transferred to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he died at 4:43 p.m.

The driver of the Isuzu, a 54-year-old Kailua-Kona man, was treated at Kona Community Hospital and released.

Both men were wearing seat belts in the incident reported at 10:43 a.m.

It is not yet known whether speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash that occurred 200 feet south of the intersection with Kaiminani Drive.

The fatality was the 24th traffic death on the Big Island this year compared with 15 at this time in 2011.
