Tourist Pulled From Water While Snorkeling

A 60-year-old visitor from Japan apparently drowned today in waters off Kailua-Kona.

Police officers arriving at the scene off the Royal Kona Resort on Ali`i Drive were told that resort personnel and bystanders had pulled an unconscious male snorkeler from the water.

They administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until county paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
