A week after 17 new records were set at Hilo Bayfront, 14 more records were shattered Saturday during the Puna Canoe Club-hosted Moku O Hawai’i Canoe Racing Regatta. Half of those records were marks that were set just last week.

Three races in, Kai Opua set the pace for shattering records, knocking down a record they set seven days prior in the Mixed 12 event by almost a second and a half, posting a time of 2:02.39. They would set five more race records throughout the day. Three races later, they knocked down the Women Novice B event record set last year by Kawaihae Canoe Club, crushing it by over four seconds with a time of 1:52.20. In the next race, they beat their own Girls 14 mark from last week by over four seconds, posting a time of 1:54.12.

Six races later, Kai Opua beat the Girls 16 record that their own club set last year with a finishing time of 4:27.28. They would set the next record eight races later, blasting last year’s mark that they set in the Women’s Sophomore race by over 20 seconds with a time of 8:20.42. The final record that they broke was in the Women’s Open Four race, defeating Kawaihae’s 2011 time with a 4:18.85 finish.

The host canoe club wasn’t kind to the record books, either. Puna took down four race records Saturday, starting with the Boys 13 race, defeating last year’s finish from Keaukaha Canoe Club by over four seconds, finishing at 1:46.74. Three races later, their Boys 14 crew bested their own record mark from last week by over four seconds, finishing at 1:40.07.

Puna Canoe Club took down both Senior Masters race records, starting with the women’s event, beating last week’s time by almost eight seconds with a finishing time of 4:19.75. They took down Kai Opua’s record in the men’s race with a time of 3:41.61.

Kai ‘Ehitu set a record in the Mix Novice B race, defeating last year’s mark by Keauhou with a time of 1:44.73. Keauhou set records in both Masters races, while Keaukaha bested their own mark from last week in the Men’s Golden Masters race with a time of 3:55.55.
