UPDATE: Police Identify Motorcyclist in Fatal Crash
Big Island police have identified the motorcyclist who died in a crash Wednesday as 31-year-old Brocky A. Rapozo of Honoka‘a.
Rapozo died in the crash involving another vehicle that occurred at about 11:30 a.m. near the 14-mile marker on Highway 190.
Police said Rapozo was operating a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle when he attempted to overtake a 2011 Chevrolet sedan heading north. Police said he struck the left rear corner of the car, lost control, and struck a guardrail.
He was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital at 3:13 p.m.
The Traffic Enforcement Unit has opened up a negligent homicide investigation. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
Police are not sure if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but believe that speed played a role. The victim was not wearing a helmet.
The crash occurred about two miles south of the Waikoloa Road junction, in the vicinity of construction for the Ke‘amuku bypass of Saddle Road.
There were four people in the Chevrolet sedan, including a 48-year-old man, his 46-year-old wife, and two children, boys ages 8 and 14. None of them were injured.
