The weather forecast wasn’t promising, but even as Joey Estrella, University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Head Coach, saw a glimmer of hope to get the game in, Mother Nature would not cooperate, and Wednesday’s PacWest conference game against Grand Canyon was postponed.

The wet weather started early in the morning, as heavy showers hung over the Hilo area as early as 5:15 a.m. The rain would begin to let up later in the morning, although the sun never made its way though the clouds. The heavier rain would return just after 4 p.m., and it hung around for the majority of the afternoon.

At 5:25 p.m., Coach Estrella announced that the game would be delayed at least an hour. The veteran head coach said that the weather forecast appeared to look better in that time span, so he tried to wait it out. Not even five minutes after Estrella announced the delay, the showers came down harder, and at about 5:35 p.m., the game was officially called.

Thursday’s scheduled doubleheader will still be played at 4 p.m., with the first game going all 9 innings, and the second game going 7, according to PacWest procedures. Wednesday’s game will be made up on Friday as part of another doubleheader, also starting at 4 p.m., and following the same game lengths.
