County firefighters called to the athletics area at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Sunday night found a smoldering fire in an industrial gas dryer.

The fire had not extended beyond the dryer located in Physical Education Building #320 located adjacent to the gymnasium, and only minor smoke damage had occurred, said Capt. Gregory Rapozo of the Kawailani fire station.

Damage was estimated at $10,000.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 7:05 p.m. and required only eight minutes to extinguish the fire. The cause is under investigation.
