No Tsunami Threat to Hawai’i Following 7.1M Japan Earthquake

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kyushu, Japan.

Japan has issued a tsunami advisory for their nearby coasts. An advisory means that threat of a tsunami in the area is possible but under evaluation. There is no threat to Hawai’i.

According to PTWC, the earthquake occurred Friday at 6:25 a.m. Hawai’i time.

United States Geological Survey officials say the earthquake was located 0.6 miles west-southwest of Kumamoto, Japan; 7.5 miles north-northeast of Uto, Japan; 8.1 miles south-southeast of Matsubase, Japan; and 392.1 miles south-southeast of Seoul, South Korea..
