Officer Injured in Traffic Stop Attempt

A Hawai’i Police Department officer was injured during an attempted traffic stop in Hilo early Monday morning.

According to HPD, the officer initiated a traffic stop around 12:40 a.m. along Kanoelehua Avenue near Kawili Street, but the driver, who was in a sedan, did not stop and instead drove away.

Not long after, HPD reports that the car was located in the “Isles” parking lot off of  Lihiwai Street.

The officer approached the vehicle and the driver attempted to flee, colliding with a police vehicle.

Two male suspects fled on foot.

An officer was treated at Hilo Medical Center for substantial but non-life-threatening injuries, and has since been released.

A possible suspect has been identified by Area I Criminal Investigations Section Detectives. An investigation continues.
