A Kailua-Kona man died as a result of a single vehicle crash that happened Oct. 9 on Hinalani St. near Anini St. in Kailua-Kona.

According to a Hawai’i Police Department report issued Monday, authorities responded to a 6:30 p.m. call on Oct. 9. Police determined that a man who had been on a 2008 Adly moped, traveling on the right side of the lane and heading east on Hinilani St. near Anini St., passed a vehicle that was making a left turn onto Anini St. and struck a rut in the road.

The man was thrown from the moped and it proceeded to landed on the lower portion of his body.

Fox was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead on Oct. 10 at 8:12 p.m.

Speed or alcohol do not appear to have been factors. A coroner’s inquest investigation has been initiated by Traffic Enforcement Unit officers.

This is the 10th fatality on Big Island roads this year, compared to 23 at this time last year.
