UPDATE: Police Identify Victim in Nanawale Estates Shooting

Police have identified the victim of Monday’s shooting as 40-year-old Mateo D. Balinbin Jr. of Nanawale Estates.

An autopsy scheduled for today was rescheduled for Wednesday.

Seon Keoni Aki, 43, of Nanawale Estates, who was arrested Monday on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting, remained today at the Hilo cellblock without charges.

A Puna man was arrested Monday afternoon on suspicion of murder following a fatal shooting in Nanawale Estates.

Police responding at 2:19 p.m. to a home on Maui Street in the subdivision found the body of a man inside.

Detectives were told that another man was seen leaving the home in a dark-colored pickup truck and issued an all-points bulletin for both the truck and its driver.

After receiving a tip, at 4:41 p.m. police arrested Seon Keoni Aki at a home in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

The 43-year-old Nanawale Estates man was being held at the Hilo cellblock.

The name of the victim has been withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

An autopsy has been scheduled for today to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
