It’s a tragic statistic to think about but stark reminder to prioritize safety and exercise caution on state and county roadways during such a celebratory season while the Aloha State honors the class of 2025.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation reported a 10% increase in traffic fatalities in 2024 with 51 from the City and County of Honolulu, 29 from Hawaiʻi Island, 14 from Maui County and 8 from Kauaʻi County.

GoFundMe pages so far have raised more than $64,000 for medical expenses and a funeral service for the families of two Hawaiʻi Island teens who were involved in two accidents within a week.

It is not believed that speed or impairment were factors in the collision.

Of the 59 fatalities this year, 12 reports listed excessive speeding as the primary factor, eight cited suspected impairment and additional reckless driving behaviors such as not wearing a helmet, and seven listed multiple contributing factors such as speed, reckless driving, and inattention.

Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, and two were under the age of 21.

To date, there were 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities, compared with six fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities for the same time last year.

Sienna Tavares-Brown’s blood alcohol content was allegedly more than three times the legal limit.

The crash occurred on Kanoelehua Avenue near Pi‘ilani Street.

The woman killed was from Keauhou.

The 30-year-old male driver was ejected from the vehicle and found unresponsive at the scene.

So far this year, there have been 78 DUI arrests compared with 91 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.3%.

The men died following a single-vehicle collision on Feb. 5, 2023, at the intersection of Waikoloa Road and the Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway in South Kohala.

Due to teen Samuel Mwarey’s death, this investigation has been changed to a negligent homicide investigation.

So far this year, there have been 935 DUI arrests compared with 962 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.8%. 

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation found that driving behavior in Hawaiʻi is improving, according to information gathered by a Statewide Attitudinal and Behavior Survey.

So far this year, there have been 888 DUI arrests compared with 923 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.8%.

So far this year, there have been 865 DUI arrests compared with 907 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 4.6%.

So far this year, there have been 853 DUI arrests compared with 891 during the same period last year.
