UPDATE: Hawaiian Electric ends public safety power shutoff watch for parts of Big Island
No safety power shutoffs were implemented during the past few days as the electric utility monitored weather conditions in areas at high risk of wildfire exposure, especially with a wind advisory that was previously in place for the same locations.
Power remains on in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk
Hawaiian Electric says public safety power shutoffs remain possible, however, for North and South Kohala on Big Island and Upcountry, Central and West Maui with wind advisory still in effect through Thursday morning (Feb. 19).
High surf advisory remains in effect for south-facing shores
Waves of 10 to 14 feet are forecast this morning, decreasing to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon and 7 to 10 feet Monday for those shorelines in Puna, Kaʻū, North and South Kona and North and South Kohala. Flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion and saltwater inundation also will be an issue with continued coastal flooding.

Participants in this year’s derby hosted by Hawai‘i Police Department Community Policing officers from North and South Kohala as well as Kona enjoyed a day of fishing, family and fun that included making gyotaku fish prints, a lucky number drawing and the chance to win a 2-night stay at the Hilton Waikōloa Village.
Gusts up to 50 mph forecast for parts of Big Island now under wind advisory
North and South Kohala as well as parts of Hāmākua, North Kona, Kaʻū and Puna will see sustained northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph throughout the day as trade winds gain strength from a tight pressure gradient created because of a surface high northeast of the state.
Wind advisory: Forecast calls for gusts up to 50 mph for parts of Big Island
Wind advisory in effect until 10 p.m. today (April 6) for North and South Kohala as well as parts of Kaʻū and Puna, including South Point, Pāhala and Kalapana.
Update: Wind advisory canceled as trade winds fall below advisory thresholds
Winds in North and South Kohala, Kaʻū and the interior of the Big Island will continue to decrease into the weekend as high pressure to the north of the islands weakens.

Extra-large swell that’s been slamming into the state continues to persist but will drop throughout the night. However, surf of 7 to 10 feet is still expected along the west coastlines of North and South Kohala and North and South Kona.
