100-plus people, including original crew member John Kruse of Kauaʻi, lined Hanalei Pier to welcome the legendary double-hulled voyaging canoe and its crew Saturday morning. The vessel is expected to reach the Big Island on its journey toward the end of October.

Amid the crisis after devastating wildfires swept across West Maui on Aug. 8, the unifying and healing power of mele (music) has summoned Maui’s celebrated recording artists, including Grammy and Nā Hōkū Hanohano winners, and hula hālau to gather to help those impacted.

Hula hālau (hula school) participants from across the world have been taking the stage at the iconic Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium in Hilo for the past couple of days to participate in the 58th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival.

On April 8, sleepy Hilo will be roused from its usual slumberous pace with the vibrant exuberance and energy of local hula halau performing throughout the day.
