Puna man indicted for attempted murder of elderly wife found lying in pool of blood
77-year-old Lowell Pofahl made his initial court appearance Nov. 29, a week after he called police and told them he tried to kill his 77-year old wife, who was later discovered with life-threatening injuries, including a fractured skull, brain bleed and partially amputateed thumb, lying in a pool of blood in the couple’s Nānāwale Estates home.

77-year-old Lowell Thomas Pofahl of Nānāwale Estates faces several charges including second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault following a domestic incident the night of Nov. 22, after which he called Hawai‘i Police Department dispatch and told authorities he tried to kill his wife.
Couple charged after security guard, man stabbed in fight outside Kona bar
40-year-old Joshua Van Why allegedly stabbed the security guard working the night of Nov. 9 at a bar in the 75-100 block of Sarona Road when he was denied and became angry and the two got into a fight. Van Why’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Rachel Hogan, was also involved in the fightand allegedly stabbed another man who was trying to intervene between the security guard and Van Why.
Traffic crash leads to assault during which victim is bitten, punched, struck with hatchet
The victim sustained a laceration to his right forearm from being struck with the hatchet and also sustained numerous abrasions in various areas of his body. The victim reported that Jones slammed his cellphone into the ground, destroying it, and struck numerous areas of his vehicle with the hatchet, causing damages.

Stanton A. Joaquin of Mountain View turned himself in April 1 and was able to post an additional required bail. He was released from custody and will make his initial court appearance Friday.

Chito K. Asuncion pleaded guilty Aug. 28 to the June 7, 2022, murder of Boyd Maygra and the May 17, 2022, murder of Brian Macaulay. He also pleaded guilty to stabbing of Gary Nakagawa on May 25, 2022, and Alice Coleman on May 30, 2022, in Hilo.
