Volcano Watch: A fresh look at Kīlauea’s 1924 explosive deposits

This week, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists dig a little deeper and share new discoveries they are making about the erupsions 100 years ago by examining the ash deposited during the events.

Many such explosions resulted from the interaction of magma with groundwater or surface water; others apparently were powered by pressurized gas possibly aided by steam but with no direct involvement of magma.

It’s important to evaluate what generates such large eruptions of the Big Island volcano because a similar eruption today would be devastating to communities surrounding Kīlauea summit and downwind.

May 2023 marks the 99th anniversary of a sequence of explosive eruptions from the summit of Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island that occurred throughout 16 days from May 11-27, 1924.
