Before the final night of competition begins, however, there’s plenty of craft fairs, markets and other events that continue throughout Hilo in case you haven’t had a chance to check any out yet.

The County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks and Recreation is partnering with Hawai‘i Futsal and the WeGo! Foundation for the event, which will take place Aug. 9-11 at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium, the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and Pana‘ewa Park.

The historic and much-anticipated 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival officially kicked off at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo on the Big Island with a Hōʻike Night for the ages.

Hawai‘i Community College celebrated its first in-person commencement ceremony in two years Friday, May 13, and while faculty, administration and speakers reflected on the challenges — and triumphs — throughout the pandemic, their message to graduates was not to look back, but to move forward and leave their mark on the future.

Hālau o Ka Ua Kani Lehua and Hālau Nā Mamo o Pu’uanahulu won the overall titles Saturday night at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

The class of 2013 speaker will be Ashlee Kalauli, a mathematics major from Honokaa who graduated from high school at Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii.

The work was done just ahead of the Merrie Monarch Festival which will celebrate its 50th anniversary beginning March 31.
