The new Connect Kākou initiative is aimed at mapping internet speeds throughout the state, ensuring federal funding is allocated to where it is needed most.

The funds come from the Internet for All initiative, which provides a total of $65 billion from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand high-speed internet accees in communities throughout the United States. On the Big Island, that includes 7,970 unserved and 295 underserved homes and businesses.

According to a press release from the University of Hawai‘i, the system will have 24 fiber pairs with a design life of 25 years and is expected to be ready for service in late 2026.
