“Making the decision to suspend a search and rescue case is incredibly difficult and is done only when we have exhausted all possible search efforts,” said Lt. Christopher Sena, a command duty officer at the Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Command Center in Honolulu.

The 34-year-old Filipino national was reported missing from the Grand Princess Monday night when the ship was approximately 1,100 miles northeast of Hilo.

The search that began Wednesday covered more than 10,000 square miles and involved three aircraft, as well as a commercial tug.
