While not in direct response to a corruption case involving a former employee of the housing agency and his co-conspirators, concerns about affordable housing development in the county have been expressed for decades.

A request by a West Hawai‘i council member to have the county auditor take a deeper look into the marred county Office of Housing and Community Development’s use of affordable housing credits was put on the backburner until later this month.

An expanding corruption scandal involving a former county housing specialist and his cronies has made headlines during the past two weeks and put a focus on the county’s use of affordable housing credits.

In a release Monday morning, the DOE said findings in the audit showed that the “Department continues to be fiscally responsible in its oversight of its funds.”

An internal audit of the State of Hawai’i Department of Education’s finances show the department is in good financial standing.
