The 2nd Annual 808 Day event is taking place on August 5th 2023, from 4:00-10:30PM at BREW (formerly known as The Brewery Block) in Kailua-Kona.
This year’s musical lineup brings together some of Hawaii’s top local talent including Landon McNamara, Through the Roots, Irie Love, These Guys, DJ Hapa Boy, Abe & Haku Po. This will be Landon McNamara’s first time playing Hawaii Island. Now based in California, Through the Roots has been coming home to Hawaii for years. DJ Hapa Boy and openers Abe & Haku Po are all Kona natives, while These Guys are from Hilo and Irie Love is Oahu-born.
808 Day was started by Big Island Grown to celebrate the anniversary of their Kona store opening but with the addition of sponsors like Kona Brewing Company, KWXX, Waiakea Water and King Kamehameha Hotel, the event has quickly grown to be a local holiday of sorts. Last year’s event had 3500 people in attendance and raised over $15000 for local charities.
This year, proceeds from ticket sales and vendor sales will be donated to the Big Dreams Foundation, a new non-profit organization started as a way to generate and cycle awareness and funding for local, community-minded projects.
808 Day has become much more than just a concert. It’s more like a block party with live art and street food and drink vendors. This year, the Big Island Grown Cultivating Art Tent will feature live painting from Dan Madsen, William Gilliam, Knucklefat Luck, and Kirk “Paintmouth” O’Hara -three of which were featured in the Cultivating Art Series. In addition, caricature artists. Caricature Party from Oahu will be drawing attendees while Oahu based artist Emma Koa of MoonKineTingz will be screen printing custom merch on site.
Food and drink vendors include local favorites HiCo, Kanaka Kava, Kalo Bombs, Kula Shave Ice, Elvolcan Taqueria, Sweet Kine 808, Gallery Thai, Meli Brew, and Big Island Grindz.
Waiakea Water, along with local personality and comic Zavier Cummings, will be handing out complimentary water. 808 Day takes place on Saturday August 5th. Parking opens at 3pm. Doors open at 4pm and music ends at 10:30PM.
