Nestled in Pāʻauhau Mauka, Hamakua Jodo Mission (HJM) stands as a beacon of cultural heritage and spiritual resilience. Established as the first sanctioned Buddhist temple built in Hawaiʻi, HJM continues to play an important role in preserving and celebrating Japanese traditions within the community. This year, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, HJM invites the public to join in their annual Obon festivities, promising an evening filled with reverence, reflection, joy, and cultural immersion.
The evening will start with a gravesite service at 5pm followed by an indoor service at 6pm to honor and remember departed loved ones. Rev. John Hara, of Wailuku and Kahului Jodo Missions, will be returning to officiate both services this year. If you were present at last year’s Obon services, you will remember Rev. Hara’s heartfelt sermon about the wildfires that ravaged his hometown of Lahaina, including his family’s temple, Lahaina Jodo Mission.
At 7pm, the atmosphere shifts to one of celebration with the much-anticipated bon odori, known as the bon dance. The rhythmic dance, accompanied by traditional music and taiko drumming by Taishoji Taiko, invites everyone to participate regardless of age or background, bringing a sense of unity and shared cultural appreciation under the stars.
It will be a fun evening filled with games, activities, and attractions for all attendees. Educational displays will showcase the temple's rich history and the life of historical figure Katsu Goto, offering insights into the enduring legacy of Japanese immigration to Hawaiʻi. Origami folding and lighted lantern hanging activities provide hands-on opportunities for creativity and remembrance, while food trucks will ensure everyone’s appetites are well satisfied throughout the night!
If you haven’t been to the temple before, you will be captivated by its architecture, known for its unique construction using traditional Japanese wood joinery without the use of nails. The temple's craftsmanship is sure to leave a lasting impression and is a testament to the hard work and determination of the immigrants who helped construct it. All are welcome to join in this special occasion. Come one, come all!
