Save the date! Join us for the Puna Hongwanji Hatsubon (Memorial Service) and Bon Dance on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.
This family-friendly community event will include lantern making, a Hatsubon (Memorial Service), a memorial parade, Puna Taiko, Bon dancing, food, children's games, and the Puna Hongwanji Boutique.
Lantern Making: 3:00-5:00 p.m. by reservation. Sessions are every 30 minutes, with space for 10 people per session. Make a lantern in honor of a loved one. Check out website for the link to register.
Hatsubon (Memorial Service): 4:00 p.m. in person and online via Zoom. This year's theme is "Still Hurting. Still Loving. Still Going On." If you need the Zoom link, please email mpunahongwanji@twc.com.
Memorial Parade: 5:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join with or without a lantern as we remember loved ones who have passed. The parade will be led by Puna Taiko and Rev. Satoshi Ka'imipono Tomioka.
Puna Taiko & Bon Dance: Around 6:00 p.m., Rev. Tomioka will offer opening remarks, followed by a Puna Taiko performance. Bon dancing will continue until 10:00 p.m. Bon Dance practices with Shinka Odorikai is being held at Hilo Daijingu. Practices are held on Wednesdays from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Please note practices may be canceled at the last minute due to other scheduling conflicts.
Food, treats, and shopping: Enjoy the concession, Puna Hongwanji andagi and baked goods, and Teapresso. The Puna Hongwanji Boutique will be open from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Children's games: Children's games and prizes will be available in the social hall from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Parking: Will be available on the temple grounds. We will also have parking available at the Keaau Middle School gym parking lot (Shipman Gym) and by HMSA/Kamehameha School across of the temple. Please be mindful and do not park in the Longs Drugs parking lot to leave the spaces for their customers.
Come eat, dance, remember, and celebrate together. Everyone is welcome.
