Hamakua Jodo Mission, the first sanctioned Buddhist temple established in Hawaii, warmly invites the community to its annual Obon Festival on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This cherished cultural and spiritual event will be held on the temple grounds, honoring the memories of ancestors and celebrating the enduring spirit of community.

The evening begins at 5:00 p.m. with an outdoor gravesite service, followed by an indoor service at 6:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the festival will transition into a lively bon dance, a traditional folk dance symbolizing the joy of reuniting with the spirits of our departed loved ones.

Festival highlights include:

Lighted lantern hanging in honor of our departed loved ones

Live taiko drumming performance by Taishoji Taiko

Photo booth, food trucks, and door prizes

Games and activities for all ages and more!

This family-friendly celebration is free and open to the public. Whether you're returning to honor loved ones or discovering Obon traditions for the first time, all are welcome.
