Big Island’s W. M. Keck Observatory captures images of cosmic web
New results from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, or KCWI, which was designed by Caltech’s Edward C. Stone Professor of Physics Christopher Martin and his team, are the first to show direct light emitted by the largest and most hidden portion of the cosmic web: the crisscrossing wispy filaments that stretch across the darkest corners of space between galaxies. The KCWI instrument is based at the W. M. Keck Observatory atop Maunakea on the Big Island.

Police seeking public’s assistance with Kona robbery investigation
Upon arriving on scene near the intersection of Ma’a Way and Kaiwi Street at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, officers located a 70-year-old Kailua-Kona man with visible injuries to his head and facial area. The victim related that while sitting on rock wall, he was approached by a male party who demanded his backpack and cellphone. The suspect then told him, “Give me your backpack or I’m going to shoot you!”

63 tons of marine debris removed from Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
The team successfully removed a total of 63 tons of marine debris over the course of this 4-week effort. This expedition was the Marine Debris Project’s second large-scale effort of 2023, with a previous expedition completed during the month of July. The total amount of debris collected by the Marine Debris Project in the last 90 days now stands at 106 tons.

Kona man charged with assault following stabbing at ‘Anaeho‘omalu Bay
Responding to the stabbing reported just before 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, South Kohala patrol officers contacted a 36-year-old male victim who reported that he had been drinking with Haskins at ‘Anaeho‘omalu Bay when he left his black backpack by the entrance to the public showers and headed closer to the shoreline. When the victim went back to check on his backpack, he discovered that food and clothing, valued at $200, had been removed without his permission.
